American engineers have created a powerful artificial “heart” for soft robots

US engineers created an artificial heart to power soft robots using fluid channels to transfer energy to moving parts. The pumps that move the fluid are usually too bulky to be used outside of the robot. However, the new design is compact enough to be “implanted” inside the robot.

Cornell University scientists and the US Army Research Laboratory were able to develop a soft, powerful and small-deformable pump specifically for this purpose. It is powered by both hydrodynamic and magnet forces.

“Soft pumps function in the same way as human hearts and blood vessels. We have previously presented blood for robots. Combining these two elements can make cars more real .” – Professor Robert Sheperd of Cornell University (Robert Sheperd) said about the invention.

The new pump is made from a soft silicone tube. A wire is attached to the tube and wound into a magnetic coil. Inside the tube is a magnet. Depending on the magnetic field applied, the magnet can move back and forth as a piston to push liquids like water or low viscosity oils.

The pump’s performance and pressure are approximately 100 times better than soft pumps, according to the authors. Scientists now hope to build a soft robot based on this artificial “heart”.

Soft robots can be made from soft materials that are similar to living tissue. Soft robots are more flexible and adaptable than traditional rigid robots. They also offer greater safety when working close to people.
