Mercedes named most innovative automaker, beating VW and Tesla

In recent years, electric cars, self-driving function, and other AI-supported functions have fueled a real innovation explosion. Although Tesla is the most common name, there are also VW and Mercedes.

At least that’s what a study by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) shows, which was carried out together with the consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). Stuttgart’s group landed first with 134 points, ahead of Volkswagen’s 125. Tesla came in third with 87 points.

Mercedes-Benz was first because it had the lowest ‘world-first’ percentage at just below 50 percent. This was due to the electric drive in the luxury model EQS which is extremely economical and the benefits of connectivity.

The Stuttgart-based company does well in premium segments, but Volkswagen is also a successful volume manufacturer. In this category, the Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen is the market leader. Volkswagen is particularly innovative in autonomous driving and its assist systems. Volkswagen was also awarded points in Interface & Connectivity as well as Connected Services.

Although Tesla is not able to keep up with Volkswagen and Mercedes, it’s possible that Tesla is only in the premium segment, with a small number of vehicles. Tesla leads the charge in autonomous driving (level 2+) and is setting the standard.

Tesla was also first in the category of new connected services. This includes charging services and infotainment. While Mercedes, Volkswagen and Tesla are “old friends” in this study, what’s new is the fact that China is gaining more ground. Two Chinese manufacturers, Geely and SAIC, rank in the top 5 overall.
